Our testimonials

Zwelethu Ngcobo
(parent of Khady, a teenager living with autism)

"As the parent of a 16-year-old teenager living with autism, our journey has been filled with both challenges and moments of incredible growth. My daughter, Khady, was initially misunderstood for many years and misdiagnosed at a young age before finally receiving an autism diagnosis at the age of 11. While the diagnosis brought clarity and empowerment to our family, it also exposed us to the harsh reality of how little society understands autistic children and their unique needs. Finding Vuyolethu’s Haven has been one of the greatest blessings in our lives. The organisation has provided not only awareness and education, but also hope, acceptance, and a sense of belonging for both my child and our family. Before receiving the right support, Khady often struggled with being misunderstood by others. Although she is incredibly creative, intelligent, loving, and deeply spiritual, most people focused on her differences instead of her strengths. Through the advocacy and inclusive support promoted by Vuyolethu’s Haven, my daughter has been encouraged to embrace who she is without shame or fear of judgment. Vuyolethu’s haven has been a platform of opportunity and empowerment for my child. Some of the fantastic opportunities the organisation has created for Khady include:

• Serving as a panellist in a panel discussion delving into autism related topics.
• Being a guest/interviewee on an autism podcast during autism awareness month.
• Being a speaker at an autism golf day fundraiser.
• Meeting the Minister of Basic Education, Siviwe Gwarube at an event dedicated to inclusive learning.

The organisation’s commitment to educating communities and schools about autism has made a tremendous difference in helping children like Khady feel seen, accepted, and valued. My daughter now feels more confident expressing herself and engaging socially in environments where she is understood and supported. As a parent, it has been emotional and comforting to witness her growth in confidence, independence, and emotional well-being. What stands out most about Vuyolethu’s Haven is their compassion and dedication to creating safe, peaceful, and inclusive spaces where autistic children can thrive according to their individual needs. They recognise that every autistic child is unique and deserving of patience, kindness, dignity, and opportunity. Because of organisations like Vuyolethu’s Haven, families like ours no longer feel isolated or invisible. They are changing lives by helping society move away from stigma and toward understanding, acceptance, and inclusion. I truly believe they are helping build a South Africa that embraces neurodiversity and empowers autistic children to reach their full potential. As a mother, I am deeply grateful for the positive impact Vuyolethu’s Haven has had on my child’s life. Their work goes beyond support, they are restoring confidence, creating awareness, and giving autistic children the opportunity to shine exactly as they are."

MOTHER TO ZAMADUBA MAZIBUKO

"Our journey as a family changed forever when our daughter was diagnosed with Autism and ADHD, at the age of 4. At first, we did not fully understand what Autism was, and living in a community where Autism is often misunderstood made our journey even more difficult. We faced judgment, isolation, fear, and uncertainty about what the future would hold for our child. Finding the right support was one of our biggest challenges. In many underserved areas in South Africa, there are very few facilities, schools, and opportunities available for children living with Autism. As parents, it was heartbreaking to watch our daughter struggle while knowing that the resources she needed were limited.

Life has truly been a roller coaster over the past 17 years. There were moments when we felt hopeless and overwhelmed, wondering if our daughter would ever be fully accepted or given a fair chance to grow and succeed. But despite the challenges, she has remained a beautiful, resilient, and talented young woman who continues to inspire us every day. Our lives began to change when she was discovered by Vuyolethu’s Haven. Through their support, care, and dedication, our daughter has been exposed to a better world filled with love, opportunity, learning, and hope. Vuyolethu’s Haven has not only supported our daughter, but they have also given our family strength and encouragement during some of our most difficult times. Today, we see a bright light at the end of the tunnel.

Today, we are eternally grateful to Vuyolethu Haven for believing in our daughter and helping her discover her potential. Their work is changing lives and bringing hope to families like ours who once felt forgotten. We thank Vuyolethu Haven from the bottom of our hearts for making a difference in our daughter’s life and for giving children with Autism the opportunity to shine."

"To Whom It May Concern,

It is with great appreciation and sincerity that we, at Futura Special School, extend this testimonial to Vuyolethu’s Haven for their outstanding and continued support.

Vuyolethu’s Haven has played a pivotal role in strengthening our school community in numerous meaningful ways. Their generous funding and active involvement in our Autism Awareness initiatives have significantly enhanced our ability to advocate, educate, and create inclusive opportunities for our learners.

Through their support of the Siyasbenza Project, many of our learners have benefited from enriched developmental opportunities. In addition, their contribution to our vocational programme through sponsoring a structured curriculum—has empowered our learners by developing both their practical and vocational skills, equipping them for greater independence and future readiness.

Vuyolethu’s Haven has also been instrumental in facilitating sibling support days, recognising the importance of supporting the broader family unit. Their involvement in our Autism Awareness Days and ongoing advocacy has strengthened not only our school, but also the understanding and compassion within our community. What truly sets Vuyolethu’s Haven apart is their unwavering presence. Whenever guidance, assistance, or advice is needed, they are always willing to step in with professionalism, care, and dedication.

As the Head of Department for the Autism Spectrum Disorder phase, I can confidently say that both I and my team including our teachers and teacher assistants have experienced significant professional and personal growth through our association with Vuyolethu’s Haven. Our school has reached greater heights since this partnership began, and our parents have also been enriched through the knowledge and support provided.

Our Principal, Mrs. M.C. Batchelor, also extends her heartfelt gratitude and appreciation to Vuyolethu’s Haven for the meaningful impact they have made within the school. She acknowledges the organisation’s unwavering commitment, generosity, and dedication in supporting both learners and staff, and expresses sincere thanks for the continued partnership that has strengthened the foundation and growth of our institution.

Without Vuyolethu’s Haven, we would not be as strong and progressive as we are today. We are deeply grateful for their continued commitment and invaluable contribution to our school community. We extend our heartfelt thanks to this remarkable organisation for their unwavering support and dedication.

Yours sincerely,

Mrs MC Batchelor. Principal.

Mrs N Rayman. Head of Department: Autism Spectrum Disorder Phase."

"The event broadened understanding of autism through a range of views, experiences, and contributions. The holistic approach adopted emphasised individual differences and responsive intervention and management strategies that would serve as gateways to learning. Hearing from parents and individuals with autism was empowering—underscoring the importance of focusing on interests and talents to help autistic individuals reach their potential and enjoy a better quality of life. Whilst the event raised significant awareness, it is indisputable that more workshops are needed to engage educators, policymakers and other social partners and stakeholders. Undoubtedly, effective development support for autistic individuals requires collaboration, coordinated efforts and resources for holistic development support and empowerment. Overall, it was a successful and insightful event."
